Is Water Damaging Your Extensions?

By Tatiana Montano

Are your hair extensions getting tangled or feeling dried out quickly? It's very likely that it's the mineral buildup in the water that you are washing them in. In today's blog post, we are going to talk about the effects hard water can have on your extensions and some small adjustments you can make to ensure you are maintaining the quality of your extensions for a long time.

HARD VS. SOFT WATER

Hard water is a common issue in many households, particularly in areas with high mineral content in their water supply.

  • West Coast. (WA, OR, CA, NV, AZ)
  • Rocky Mountains. (ID, MT, WY, UT, CO)
  • Midwest. (ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, MN, IA, MO, WI, IL, MI, IN, OH, KY)
  • Gulf Coast. (NM, TX, LA, AR, MS, AL, FL)
  • East Coast. (GA, TN, VA, WV, MD, DE, NY, RI, CT, VT, ME)

When you wash your hair or extensions with hard water, the minerals in the water can create buildup on the hair shaft, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate and leaving your hair feeling dry and rough. Hard water will wreak havoc on your own hair and will also do the same to your extensions, drying them out, causing you to use too much shampoo and conditioner, and leaving a nasty buildup behind.

HOW TO SOFTEN HARD WATER

When it comes to washing your own hair, the best solution is to invest in a filtration system within your home, but that can definitely be costly. Amazon has some great inexpensive options to purchase a filtered shower head you can easily install into your shower.

However, when it comes to washing your extensions in the sink, we highly suggest washing your hair extensions in distilled water. But why is distilled water the answer? Distilled water is free from impurities and minerals, making it gentle and nourishing for your natural hair extensions. By using distilled water to wash, condition, and rinse your extensions, you can avoid the buildup of minerals and ensure that your extensions stay soft, silky, and manageable.

Since they don't need to be washed as regularly as your natural hair, it's truly worth the trouble and a few bucks to pick up 2 gallons of distilled water from the local grocery store to use to wash, condition, and rinse your extensions in. You will not only see a huge difference in the texture of your hair extensions, but it will prolong the life of your extensions & make them look and feel much softer for much longer.
